ActiveX was developed and is used mainly by Microsoft. A lot of people believe, that ActiveX just refers to the ActiveX controls, which can be used as a plugin in Internet Explorer, however ActiveX is a whole technology, which is used to program object-oriented parts of software, which you can use again and again.

The ActiveX Controls used in the Internet Explorer can be compared to Java Applets. They are small applications, which run inside your browsers window.

One other example: Active Server Pages use ActiveX, too.
