stands for bitmap. It is a file format to store an image file. Microsoft invented it and was the first to use and integrate it into the windows operating system. Since then it has evolved in a standard to store image files and is accepted by almost all graphical programmes on all platforms.
The bitmap format does not use any compression techniques wich means that the files are relatively large and in most cases unsuitable to use for email or on web pages. Alternative formats like JPEG and Gif are more suitable for this.
