Internet Message Access Protocol or IMAP for short. IMAP is a protocol used to access electronic mail messages on a server. Using this protocol allows your email program to access remote message stores as if they were local. It operates on Port 143, and has the ability to synchronize email messages and folders to the server. This makes it very powerfull because your email messages are essentially stored on two computers. As an example, you can create a new mail folder in Outlook Express or Eudora and instantly it is duplicated on the server. |
