What is ODBC?

ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity is a standardised way to access databases. In effect ODBC creates a layer between the actual database to present programmes with a uniform interface for all database interactions, regardless of the underlying database vendor or technology.

The use of ODBC in a computer programme ensures that the entire programme does not have to be rewritten every time the underlying database system changes
