A router is a device or setup that finds and determines the best route for data travel between any two networks. A router forwards packets from one network to another based on network layer information. To do this it uses a routing protocol to gain information about the network, and the uses algorithms to select the optimal path or route based on several criteria known, the definition of this is routing metrics.
