What is Stakeholders?

Stakeholders are groups that have an interest in an organisation s success because its activities and performance have a negative or positive impact on them. Stakeholders exist in both the internal environment of an organization, such as employees, or the external environment, such as the local community, and they may have a direct or indirect association with the organization. Stakeholders can include shareholders, managers, suppliers, investors and customers as well as employees, the government and the broader local and international community. While many shareholders are largely interested in the financial success of the organization, interest will often be broader than this - for example the local community may be interested in the financial success (in so far as it creates employment) but also in the environmental impact of activities.
