Telnet is a method to transfer commands between systems. I sit on my home computer and type in e.gg. ls. This command is then transferred to the computer, on which I m logged in. Then this computer sends me his response. Telnet has been replaced by SSH on many systems, because it tranfers passwords and usernames in human-readable, non-encrypted way.
