A web server is a software application running on a server box or workstation that is always on. Its purposes it to serve (and parse code if necessary ie ASP, PHP, scripts etc.) web page requests to visitors of a web site hosted on that web server. Examples of popular web servers include; Apache, Internet Information Server, ColdFusion server and Sun Java System Web Server. You can set up your own personal dedicated web server and connect it to the Internet or you can host your web pages on commercial web hosting service providers servers.
